Zagora nestled 480m above sea level in the verdant eastern slopes of Pelion, is Pelion`s largest village in terms of population. It is a mountainous settlement, with rich cultural heritage and it features stunning views towards the Aegean Sea. What makes it special, is the fact that the village is divided in 4 neighborhoods: Perachora, Agia Kiriaki, Agios Georgios and Metamorphosi, each of which has its own distinctive characteristics. The village`s history begins in the 12th century, however several findings and ruin discoveries, have made known that ancient settlements existed since the Homeric Ages.

During the 17th and 18th century, Zagora had strong trade and cultural growth, as displayed by the many mansions that still stand. In the Middle ages it was a settlement that experienced great development and prosperity as the famous ships from Zagora travelled as far as up to the Far East. Leaving Zagora behind you and only at a 7km distance, one can find Horefto, the seaport of Zagora. This old trade/maritime center has one of the most beautiful and large sandy beaches of eastern Pelion famous for its length (2.5 km)and clear blue waters, fine sand and thousands of tourists visiting it every year.

Horefto is an ideal resort to relax and practice water sports as well. The local taverns and restaurants treat you with fresh seafood and give you the chance to get to know the famous and traditional ouzeries that challenge your taste palete with an unbelievable variety of local specialties.

Ideal mountain and sea combination

If you happen to be in Zagora, don’t miss visiting the School Of Rigas Feraios (1777), the oldest school in Pelion, founded by Zagora’s Patriarch Callinicus, where the famous revolutionary Feraios attended. Later it was renamed “Greek Museum” and today it features impressive and excellently preserved interior and exterior. In the central square there is the Public Library (1762), featuring rare documents, manuscripts and codes of about 25.000 titles and It is said that the first books came from Amsterdam by the Greek immigrant Ioannis Prigkos.

Zagora together with Horefto, are a perfect combination of mountain and sea, that’s why they are recommended for holidays at any time of the year. During winter, you can visit the Agrioleukes Ski Center 20km away, while in summer, head to Horefto, the port village of Zagora with its stunning 2km beach. When renting a boat, you have the chance to discover all the neighboring beaches (Parisaina, Analipsi, Agioi Saranta) some of which are remote and unorganized but will captivate you, however, with their unspoiled beauty.

Cultural events

The cultural prosperity of the area relied on “Elinomousseio”, Greek Museum, also known as School of Rigas, which was a school of higher education, where the spiritual fathers of the Greek revolution attended. In the various folklore festivals that are organized you'll get a hint of Pelion's tradition and national costumes. Nonetheless, many religious festivals are also organized to honor of the respective saints that are celebrated during summer. Last but not least, at the beginning of September, it is worth attending the “Apple Festival”, a fair with lots of music and local delicious dishes that is held in honor of the most prized local product, the famous “Zagorin” apples.
