An ideal winter destination

Leaving behind the village of Portaria and after approximately 12 km you reach the mountainous settlement of Chania, which is located at an altitude of 1200m, one of the highest points of Pelion. The village was named after old quest houses and inns, named “chania”, that offered accommodation and a short rest to travelers and merchants as well as residents from Eastern Pelion, who transferred goods to and from Volos with the help of animals. Some of these old guesthouses are still being preserved whereas others gave way to traditional hotels, taverns and other tourist facilities that offer to visitors hospitality of very high quality.

The village today, is the link that connects Western with Eastern Pelion, it has lush vegetation consisting of mainly beech, chestnut and fir trees and over the last years it has experienced great tourism growth as more and more travelers prefer Chania as their destination. That is especially during winter, explaining why it is one of the most idyllic locations for skiing and other winter activities. Only 2, 5 km away, at a higher altitude of 1500m, in the area of Agriolefkes, one of the most beautiful and popular ski resorts in Greece can be found, created by the Alpine Club of Volos and attracting every year thousands of ski lovers and visitors.

The village, however, is ideal for holidays at any time of the year too as it offers a huge variation of stunning sceneries, being the village that overlooks both the Aegean sea as well as the Pagasetic Gulf, a “cool hideaway” during summer and starting point of numerous activities all over Pelion.
