Agios Ioannis or ‘Ai Giannis’ ,as it is widely known among the locals, is considered one of the most cosmopolitan summer resorts of Pelion and has an exemplary tourist infrastructure. A wide range of accommodation facilities host during summer season the large number of visitors, arriving from all over Greece but mainly from abroad. The 800mt wide sandy beach with white pebbles, which has been many times awarded with the blue flag, is directly in front of the village, a part of it is organized and has a lifeguard station. Emerald waters and the green slopes of the mountain complete this unique landscape. On the north side is the small harbor and a small path that leads to the beautiful beach Plaka.

Agios Ioannis, is one of the most well organized and developed holiday destinations in all of Pelion. It offers a wide range of outdoor activities for both active and relaxed holidays, such as sea kayaking, various water sports, scuba diving and boat rentals that offer you the unique opportunity to explore on your own the East Pelion coastline. A beautiful attraction in the village is the pedestrian zone, with a lane for bicycles which runs along the coastal front, with the fish taverns, restaurants, and cafes and after passing the impressive arched metal bridge next to the beach, it ends at the white pebble beach of Papa Nero.

Cultural events

Among the village’s attractions is the church of Analipsi (The Ascension) in Agios Ioannis beach, and the small monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, near the YMCA camp of Thessaloniki, that gave its name to the village. For celebrating the Saint, a fair is held every 24th of June, where the old tradition of “Klidonas” is revived, an old folk divination according to which the unmarried girls get to learn the identity of their future spouse.

It’s worthwhile to take the tour around Pelion in order to visit the villages near Agios Ioannis but mostly to admire their unique architecture, their beautiful churches and monasteries not to mention their exquisite, traditional, red wine.
